Debt management is a really good way to help people reorganize their debt so that it is manageable and they can pay their balances off completely. Debt management organizations have different ways of reorganizing or reducing debt, however it is up to the debtor to decide which program is best for their circumstances.

Most debt management companies communicate with debtors and creditors strictly over the phone or online. This makes it easier for the debtor because there are no office visits involved. Also, they companies do not charge for their services, all their workers are volunteers. There are no administrative fees, set up costs or any other hidden costs which means every penny you pay is applied to your outstanding debt.

To get a handle on debt there are various options that a debtor can choose from. One option is for the company to basically take over the finances of the debtor. The debtor deposits a determined amount of money into a trust account. Working with that money each month the debt management company makes payments to the creditors according to a payment plan that they have prepared.

The company communicates directly with your creditors requesting that they lower interest rates or accept reduced monthly payments. The debtor simply needs to focus on making one payment a month and the company works with all creditors to work toward eliminating all debts.

Another option is to go with a counseling agency. Their approach is not quite as actively involved. These counselors examine your financial situation, your income and your expenses, and prepare a payment plan that will work for your circumstances. Then it is your responsibility to closely follow their plan in order to make your way out of debt.

Counseling agencies will also contact your creditors to try to renegotiate their terms of repayment. They also give good direction on money management and learn how to better handle your finances.

Another option is to work with a charity service company. These are non-profit companies that give you advice and direction on money management. They help you develop a workable budget, but they do not contact creditors renegotiate repayment plans.

Each option has its benefits and all can help you work your way out of debt. But you must do your part, change your spending habits, and follow their direction.
